THE BEST MOMENTS

— The men experimenting with their clothes, from Heated Rivalry’s Hudson Williams in cream-coloured Armani, to Glen Powell’s blue velvet tuxedo, Kumail Nanjiani’s purple velvet one, Adam Scott’s red velvet one and Colman Domingo’s custom Valentino black tux with diamond ivies decorating one side. “It’s like a garden,” said Domingo. Williams even did a little tap dance during his Live from the Red Carpet interview to show off his Christian Louboutin black patent shoes.

— Fun fact that Powell’s Aunt Honey has a pet kangaroo named Trixie. No really. “She’s wild, but, yeah, will give a shout-out to Aunt Honey,” said Powell during the Live from E! red carpet. “Like the rest of the Powells, Trixie is not easily trained. Nobody behaves.”

— Women in gorgeous white gowns from Brittany Snow to Emily Blunt to Amanda Seyfried to Pamela Anderson to Claire Danes (Zac Posen) to Jean Smart knocked it out of the park style-wise. Ready for their closeups (or weddings?) in pristine white and it worked. Coming in a close second were stunning silver gowns worn by Kate Hudson (Armani Prive), Elle Fanning (Gucci), sister Dakota Fanning (Vivienne Westwood), Natasha Lyonne and Kylie Jenner.

— The humbleness of Adolescence producer-co-writer-actor Stephen Graham on the Live from the Red Carpet coverage: “We’re a bunch of working-class kids from England, you know what I mean? And this is surreal to us, but we seemed to have earned the right to be here. And that just shows you that you keep aiming high and you keep doing good work and being at these affairs and you never know what can happen.”

— “It has brought a coldness into the home,” joked nominee Matthew Rhys and nominee wife Keri Russell of them both being up for awards for The Beast in Me and The Diplomat respectively.

— Glaser’s opening monologue with too many highlights to mention, but this jab is pretty good: “I love you Sean (Penn). You’re such an original. Everyone in this town is obsessed with looking younger, meanwhile Sean Penn is like, ‘What if I slowly morph into a sexy leather handbag?’”

— “Hopefully you’ll see it in a cinema because they are an extinguished species now. In a cinema, when the lights go down, and eventually your chair, the pulse with some other people — that’s magic! Cinema should be seen in cinemas.” Best supporting actor Stellan Skarsgard in a motion picture winner speech for Sentimental Value.

— “What can I say? I’m a greedy bitch!” Smart winning best actress in a TV series, musical or comedy — again — for Hacks.

— “I don’t know about award shows, but when they get it right, it makes sense.” Best podcast winner Amy Poehler for Good Hang.

— “I want to thank my husband Bobby (Cannavale). He couldn’t be here. We’re getting a dragon, so he went to a reptile expo in New Jersey.” Rose Byrne, winner of best actress in a film (comedy or musical) for If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You.

— “Kevin O’ Leary. If you told me when I was 19 years old, I’d be thanking Mr. Wonderful from Shark Tank …” – Timothee Chalamet, winner of best actor in a film (comedy or musical) for Marty Supreme thanking his Canadian co-star.

THE WORST MOMENTS

— Black proved to be a boring colour for gowns, but that didn’t stop such A-listers as Julie Roberts, Ariane Grande and Mia Goth from wearing it. One notable exception was Taylor in a custom-made black Schiaparelli, a barely there black gown that hugged her figure with a plunging back bow that was “covered in diamonds.” Va-va-voom! She later called it “the party at the back.”

— Walton Goggins in a gold lame shirt worn with a black ribbon tie underneath his black suit. I think he took the word “golden” in Golden Globes too seriously.

– Ethan Hawke in a turquoise bolo tie. Good for his character on the Tulsa-set The Lowdown, but maybe not the Golden Globes red carpet?

— The Smartless podcast trio of Will Arnett, Sean Hayes and Jason Bateman as presenters, where Bateman’s unlikability was supposed to be the subject of guffaws. Instead it fell flat. Usually, they’re much funnier.

Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier and Variety’s Marc Malkin, the show’s voiceover announcers, discussing category winning probabilities on Polymarket, which was supposed to create suspense but failed miserably.

— Glaser’s attempt at singing a tribute to Marty Supreme, which was thankfully stopped midway by Fran Drescher, who said: “You have to stop singing. Your voice is so annoying.”
