My husband passed away this spring after a long battle with heart disease. We had great hospice care at the end, and they arranged for a hospital bed to be set up in the family room because he was too weak to go upstairs.
In my town, Mt. Lebanon, there’s a Freebo group where people give away or lend things they no longer need. I asked if anyone had a baby monitor I could borrow. One woman responded, and she came over to show me how to use it. I had never met her before.
The baby monitor brought me so much comfort in the last few weeks of my husband’s life. I could go to sleep listening to his breathing and hear his voice when he called out to me in the morning.
When my husband passed, I thanked the woman who had lent me the monitor. She told me to leave it on the front porch when I was done.
The afternoon she was supposed to pick it up, my doorbell rang, and there she was with a plant, soup, a pasta dinner, and a large chicken salad. I was overwhelmed.
She was basically a stranger to me, and her kindness brought tears to my eyes. I will never forget her generous act during such a difficult time.
